RITUAL HONORING ERZULIE
DANTOR AND OUR LADY
OF PROMPT SUCCOR
This
past July 15th Mambo
Sallie Ann Glassman
and La Source Ancienne
Ounfo held the ninth
annual Hurricane Protection
Ceremony on behalf of
the city of New Orleans.
Manbo Sallie Ann and
her devotees begin the
ceremony by calling
first upon Ellegua,
or Papa Legba as he
is affectionately called
in the old Kreyol, to
meet them at the crossroads
between the worlds and
to open the way that
they may celebrate and
honor the intercessors
in both the physical
and spirit worlds. A
mock battle between
the emissaries of the
spirit world and the
Manbo ends in the Mambo's
victory and for a brief
time she becomes the
bridge between the worlds.
The ceremony is held
every year, including
2005, which saw the
most devastating natural
disaster ever to strike
the US in the form of
Hurricane Katrina’s
swipe at New Orleans.
Mambo Sallie Ann credits
the powerful intercession
of Erzulie Dantor and
Our Lady of Prompt Succor
for saving the city,
and reminded everyone
present that the storm’s
last minute turn was
not only miraculous
but was the only thing
that spared the city
annihilation. Even the
failure of the levees,
Mambo stated, can be
seen as significant
in alerting us to the
weaknesses in the environment
around us. Knowing this,
she said, we could proceed
to repair and prevent
in the future.
