Tradition has
it that the handsome entrance
door ‘was hammered out
of iron by the slaves Madame
Lalaurie kept shackled to the
anvil.’ This must be taken
with several generous pinches
of salt, for the doors is not
of iron but wood and the decorations
on it were not cared but put
on by appliqué, a sort
of plastic wood applied and
formed as a sculptor would lay
on modeling clay. These ornamentations
show, in the lower oblong panel,
Phoebus in his chariot, lashing
his griffins.
